In 1981, Iraq signed a massive contract with China for 2,700 of these tanks, 1,000 of which would come through the black market. The tank was first used in the East Mysan battles on 4 November 1982. These copies of the Soviet T-55 proved to be inferior especially in terms of armor quality, a problem that was mainly manifest when confronted with anti-tank weapons. According to Iraqi armor officers, another issue with these tanks was its elevated noise, as the engine was very loud and the treads produced a high squeaking sound when moving on paved roads that was noticeable several kilometers away.
